The problem with being inexperienced at poker is that people do not know when to quit so they play the hand regardless of what cards they are holding and this can often lead to players losing money and sometimes losing big money but very rarely winning large pots for themselves. For an example if you get dealt a seven and queen the poorer players will automatically think that they could get dealt a queen or a seven on the flop and they are on to a winner but the question you should be asking yourself is what if it does not come out then what are the odds of you winning a hand?
Do not get me wrong you can be lucky but a smart player is a wealthy one and the gung ho player is a poorer one. The hand I have used as an example is just one of the varieties of bad hands that are available in a pack of cards at the hold em tables so do not think that this is the only one to avoid.
Let me create a sample for you to show you how this can work in a larger game of Hold Em.
If you were sitting down playing at a ten seated competition table and you are close to the beginning of the betting process and you call you can basically kiss your money goodbye as there are a number of factors that you need to take into consideration. If you have a seven and a queen and you are second in the order of play and you call then you have to think that what if somebody raises you and then you can see that somebody might have a good hand to begin with taking into account that there are already twenty cards from the deck on the table, it is quite possible and probable. So at this point is your hand of a queen and seven going to be the winning hand? You should fold unless you think the raiser is bluffing and then you re raise but this is a very risky game to play and usually fails so you lose more money again.
A good poker player knows how to play smart and this is why there are some very good players out there and some very bad ones. It is advised to stop wasting your money and chips by calling hands that are giving you a lower chance of winning. Some other hands include jack and five, as well as ten and eight and if you are in an early position then it is advised to fold unless you are in the blind position at the time or the dealer position then you could chance it and you never know you may get lucky but if you are in the early position then you should really fold and wait for the next hand.
If you avoid making the simplest of mistakes then you are on your way to becoming a good poker player and have a better chance of winning more.
